This winter, we are following the Witches way to stay safe from cold and flu using a holistic approach. If you are hesitant about holistic remedies then why not give it a try, you have nothing to lose? There are many herbs, along with other supplements and foods that can be used to boost your immune system and keep you feeling well throughout the colder months. I have rounded up some of my favourite herbs to use to treat and prevent cold and flu, for you to try this winter!

Echinacea
Echinacea is a great herb to use, especially in the winter due to its immune system boosting properties. It is a natural antibiotic which can help with cold and flu symptoms, relieve pain, reduce inflammation and also has antiviral and antioxidant effects. It is often used as an ingredient for topical medicines to treat wounds and skin irritations. It can be taken as a supplement or drunk as herbal tea.

Garlic
Garlic is another natural antibiotic which you can use this winter. When crushed, garlic releases allicin. Allicin has many health benefits including lowering blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. It helps fight bacteria and can reduce your risk of infections. You can supplement it daily by dicing a raw clove and swallowing with water.

Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root contains a fibre which swells in water, creating healthy mucus. This can act as a protective coating inside the body helping to cure respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, and also help to treat coughs, colds, UTI's and even internal organ damage. You can get marshmallow root as a tea, supplement or a tincture.

Ginger
Ginger is a very typical winter healer. It is rich in antioxidants, helping to prevent colds and flus and fight off bad bacteria. It is also used to treat nausea and digestive problems. A great way to use it is to boil ginger root and lemon in water for 10 minutes, then drain it out and drink it. You can add honey for some extra flavour!

Nettle
Nettles are rich in vitamins and minerals, helping to boost your immune system and fight of bacterias. It can also be used as natural antihistamine and helps with skin and bone health. You can pick the leaves yourself to make into a herbal tea.

Elderberries
Elderberry has been used for years to treat the flu. They contain many nutrients such as fibre, iron, potassium and vitamin C. It can also reduce cell damage caused by free radicals. You can cook the berries to make jams or pies, or you can find elderberry supplements.

Thyme
Thyme is a great cooking herb and has many winter health benefits. It is antibacterial and antifungal. It is used to treat coughs and can even clear bronchial mucus. It works by bringing up the congestion and helping to clear the lungs. You can drink it in tea and use it to season foods.
